Budget 2024: Building a Fair and Prosperous Future for Every Generation
As your Member of Parliament for Cambridge, I am excited to share with you the transformative measures introduced in Budget 2024. This budget is a blueprint for fairness and economic growth, designed to touch the lives of Canadians across all generations with substantial investments in housing, healthcare, education, and much more.
Transforming Housing Accessibility and Affordability
Budget 2024 lays out ambitious plans to significantly increase the availability of affordable homes across Canada:
- Public Lands for Homes Plan: We are utilizing all tools available to unlock the potential of 250,000 new homes by 2031 on public lands, including properties owned by Canada Post and National Defence.
- Expansion of the Apartment Construction Loan Program: An additional $15 billion is allocated to expedite the building of more rental apartments, with the program supporting over 131,000 new homes by 2031-32.
- Canada Builds: This initiative fosters a collaborative approach to build affordable homes for the middle class on underutilized lands across the nation, combining federal loans with provincial and territorial investments.
- Enhancements to the Housing Accelerator Fund: With a $400 million top-up, this fund will continue to fast-track over 750,000 new homes over the next decade.
- Launch of the Canada Rental Protection Fund: A new $1.5 billion fund to protect and grow our stock of affordable housing.
- Investment in the Affordable Housing Fund and Rapid Housing Stream: An additional $1 billion for building affordable homes and making the Rapid Housing Stream a permanent fixture following its previous successes.
Lowering Everyday Costs for Canadians
We are also focused on lowering the everyday costs for Canadians through various strategic measures:
- Expansion of Child Care: Building more child care spaces to support the Canada-wide early learning and child care system, aiming for $10-a-day child care.
- Introduction of the Canada Disability Benefit: This new benefit will supplement provincial and territorial programs, enhancing the financial well-being of over 600,000 working-age persons with disabilities.
- National School Food Program: This program will expand existing efforts to provide healthy meals to an additional 400,000 children each year.
- First Steps Towards National Pharmacare: Ensuring cost is not a barrier to accessing prescription contraceptives and many diabetes medications.
- Cracking Down on Additional Fees: Implementing measures to reduce non-sufficient funds fees and improve transparency for service fees, such as those charged by airlines.
Catalyzing Economic Growth Across Generations
Our commitment to securing Canada’s future economic prosperity is evident in our investments aimed at boosting productivity and competitiveness:
- Artificial Intelligence and Technology: Investing $2 billion to establish the AI Compute Access Fund and Canadian Sovereign Compute Strategy to empower Canadian researchers and businesses.
- Support for Education and Research: Increasing support for student and postgraduate researchers, including significant investments for First Nations post-secondary students.
- Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program: Launching a $5 billion program to facilitate access to capital for Indigenous communities for projects on their terms.
- Major Economic Investment Tax Credits: Introducing a $93 billion suite of tax credits to drive clean growth and secure Canadian businesses.
These key measures from Budget 2024 are designed to ensure fairness for every generation, creating a resilient and inclusive economy.
